The California Department of Health Care Services (DCHS) defines a Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist as an individual who is at least 18 years of age, who has self-identified as having experience with the process of recovery from a mental illness, substance use disorder, or both, either as a consumer of these services or as the parent, caregiver, or family member of a consumer, and who has been granted certification under a county  Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist certification program.

To complete the application for registration, you will need to provide a proof of age (driver’s license, state id, or birth certificate) that indicates you will be at least 18 years old before you take the Certification Exam, and you will need to provide proof of education (high school diploma or transcript, GED, or college diploma or transcript, or equivalent degree). If this is a barrier, Parents Anonymous Inc. will work with you to the best of our ability to help you get qualified.

Why You Should Seriously Consider Becoming a Medi-Cal Certified Peer Support Specialist

Today, many government, health care, and community-based organizations are seeking the assistance of Peer Support Specialists. The statewide certification of Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialists allows these organizations to find a new way to employ the needed services of Peer Support Specialists. Most organizations are unable to enlist the services of Peer Support Specialists due to the cost. Now, Medi-Cal Certified Peer Support Specialists can be charged directly to Medi-Cal. This is going to increase the demand for Medi-Cal Certified Peer Support Specialists across many governmental, health care, and community-based organizations around the state.
